THERE was a try-fest from the most unexpected quarter during Windermere’s 53-0 rout of Chorley at Dawes Meadow last Saturday.
Second-row Jason Brown scored first after just five minutes – and it was the sort of try second-rows are supposed to score. Lineout turned to maul, Brown was in possession at the back as it gathered momentum and he followed the pack over the line.
But that was just the start of a splendid afternoon for the big man. He was on the score sheet twice more and was unlucky to miss out on a fourth try, at one stage galloping an impressive 40 metres - the last 15 with Chorley players hanging off him.
Proctor scored two and his ferocious tackling and committed ball-carrying proved that his shoulder injury is well and truly healed. Blenkharn scored one, as did Matt Nield and Sean Stafford.
Johnny Benson benefited from the last-gasp tackle that denied man of the match Brown his fourth.
Brown did not stretch for the line and instead, turned and presented Benson with a gift of a try.
This presents a picture of one-way traffic, but in fact, Chorley were no mugs and showed real grit to tough it out for the whole 80 minutes.
The difference was Windermere’s commitment and fitness. They turned Chorley over at most of the scrums and took all their own lineouts. The clean ball allowed Windermere to play much of the game at a frenetic pace with the back line combining with good support from the forwards to produce some splendid entertaining rugby.
Windermere are considering an occasional 2nd XV as the number of players increases. Training is on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm at the club on Longlands Road, Bowness.
