A WET pitch at Cockermouth did not inconvenience Windermere's pack who produced one of their best displays of the season so far.
Although Windermere came under early pressure, they earned several penalties to get themselves out of trouble and worked their way upfield to eventually prise open the home defence.
After the pack won good ball, No. 8 Mike Gregg broke smartly before the ball was recycled and fed to Jonathan Cooper, who eluded the defence and found Danny Blenkharn was on his shoulder to take the pass and score. Cooper converted.
At the restart Windermere were caught napping and allowed Cockermouth to come back into contention in what developed into an intense contest with some superb rugby played in poor conditions.
It seemed inevitable that a mistake would lead to the next score and unfortunately Windermere were penalised for holding on the ground and Paul Dixon converted to give Cockermouth their first points.
Cockermouth altered their game-plan at the start of the second half and tried to play a running game as they were struggling to compete with the visitors' pack In a finely-balanced finish, Windermere got into the home side's 22 with 15 minutes remaining and the pack won four scrums in a row, including two against the head.
From the last one, the ball came out the back of the home side's scrum. Cockermouth tried to clear to touch only for Mike Procter to charge-down the kick, allowing Shaun Stafford to pounce for Windermere's second try.
In the dying seconds Cockermouth got back into Windermere's half and Jeff Peet scored a consolation try.
n Windermere are at home to BAE Barrow in the Story Cumbria Cup on Saturday.
