UPPER EDEN took the North Lancashire and Cumbria League leaders right to the wire in their encounter at Pennine Park on Saturday.
After establishing a first half lead, Eden withstood Wigton's revival and went in front again only to concede a knockout punch when they appeared to be in control and heading for a useful victory.
Eden led 9-0 at half time through two penalties and a drop-goal, having gone close to scoring a try several times, the closest coming when Colin Wolstenholme was adjudged to have lost control over the line.
Wigton clawed back two penalties in the second half and then a converted try to take a 9-13 lead but Wolstenholme crashed over and Heron converted to 16-13 ahead.
The Wigton scrum-half dashed Eden's hope when he found a gap to score a last-gasp try under the posts an they added the conversion.
