KIRKBY Lonsdale hung on to a slender lead to progress in the Intermediate Cup in this rearranged first-round tie played under floodlights at Underley Park on Tuesday.

Handling was difficult on a blustery cold, rainy night but both sides tried to vary their game with some wide passing movements.

Eden set up the first attack when they drove down in the opposition 22, but Kirkby swept back upfield, caught the visitors offside and kicked to the corner only for a knock-on to spoil the chance of a try.

After the wind carried a Kirkby penalty attempt wide, Eden replied with an almost identical attack which ended with Heron putting over a penalty to opening the scoring.

This setback stung Kirkby into action and getting back into the visitors' 22, Bainbridge drove over the tryline but could not get the touch down.

Fierce tackling prevented any further scoring chances until Eden scrum-half Thompson made a good break but was eventually smothered and could not get his final pass away and a penalty attempt by Heron and a snatched drop goal attempt were both wide to keep the half-time deficit at 3-0.

Pressing from the restart, Kirkby missed another penalty but were retaining the ball better and Horsfall showed amazing dexterity as the ball was worked out for Thompson to go over in the corner for an unconverted try.

From the kick-off Kirkby returned a high ball into the 22, where the defence was caught into possession and hung on to the ball and Mallaband put over the penalty.

Eden fought back and earned a penalty just inside the Kirkby half. Eden elected to go for goal but the attempt was well wide.

Still looking dangerous, Eden's chip over the top looked to have put them in open space but Horsfall once again took the ball and counter-attacked.

Two more Eden penalties put them in a good attacking position but they dropped the ball and the danger passed.

Play swung one way and then the other, but there was no further score.

The Kirkby forwards were outweighed but stuck to their task well with the front row of Holmes, Shepherd and Groves working well.
