Workington.............. 32 Kirkby Lonsdale....... 14 TWO tries from right wing Gavin Thompson, one in each half, were not enough to carry the day against Workington, who made the better use of the windy conditions.
Kirkby were short of replacement backs and injuries to both centres during the game meant that they ended up playing two forwards in the threequarter line which limited their attacking possibilities.
As early as the opening minute they lost centre David Barton with concussion and then in the second half Oliver Atkinson went off with hamstring trouble.
Kirkby did not make the most of the wind advantage in the first half with their touch kicking not as effective as it might have been.
But after Workington missed a penalty from in front of the posts when the wind carried it away, Kirkby went ahead.
Full back James Mallaband sliced a clearance kick but it Thompson seized on the stray ball on his right wing and sped clear of the cover from almost on his own 22 to score a fine solo try behind the posts, Mallaband converting for a 7-0 lead.
Workington's powerful forwards were content to grind their way downfield and levelled the scores bfore half time, good pressure creating an overlap for their right winger to go over for a converted score.
After the break Kirkby's task became harder as Workington's fly-half kept Kirkby used the wind to pin back the visitors and, with players operating out of position, it was difficult to break out.
Workington were hard to defend against from the driving maul following lineout play and ran in three more tries to Kirkby's one, Thompson showing his pace again to go over for Kirkby's second converted try.
n Upper Eden beat new boys' St Benedict's 26-0 - all the points coming in the first half with tries from Colin Wolstenholme and Phil Hughes, while Rick Heron kicked four penalties and both conversions for a 100 per cent record on the day.
