CUMBRIA make only two changes to the squad for their County Championship game with Lancashire at Carlisle on Saturday.

Scrum-half Jason Spires is unavailable because he is attending a wedding so Kendal's Mark Airey will partner Mike Scott behind the scrum.

Former Aspatria skipper Scott, now with Fylde, played club rugby with Airey at Mint Bridge.

The only other change is on the bench where Philip Skillen misses out with a shoulder injury after being hurt after coming on as a replacement on Saturday.

Simon Jewitt of Carlisle joins the squad among the replacements, and as there is also a slight injury doubt over Kendal and former Workington flanker Daniel Bowman, the Penrith back-rower Gary Johnstone is added to the party.

Kendal pair, prop Richard Harryman and hooker Duncan Green, were expected to feature but they did not attend the final midweek training session and have not been selected.

Team manager Roger Hackney came away from last week's defeat at Nuneaton against Warwickshire upbeat about the way the young team had acquitted themselves.

Included in the line-up were Penrith Queen Elizabeth Grammar School pupil Simon Davidson and Gavin Beasley of St Bees School, two youngsters who again will feature on the bench.

Gavin Thompson, who plays for Cumbria's Under-20s keeps his place on the left wing.

"If we play like we did on Saturday and show the same spirit there is no reason why we can't win," said Hackney.

"I know we lost and Warwickshire deserved to win but considering what a young side we had out I was quite pleased."

Lancashire, the holders of the trophy after last year's triumph at Twickenham, were shock first round losers against Northumberland, and this match will help determine the seedings for next year's competition.

Cumbria: Matthew Woodcock (Cockermouth), Alex Walton (Workington), Martin Armstrong (Kendal), Louw Kruger (Aspatria), Gavin Thompson (Kirkby Lonsdale), Mike Scott (Fylde), Mark Airey (Kendal), Gary Harrison (Aspatria), Alan Holmes (Sedgley Park), John-George Thompson (Workington), Rob Dawson (Penrith, capt), Derrick Nel (Aspatria), Mark Bowe (Aspatria), Daniel Bowman (Kendal), Adrian Bateson (Kendal). New-look Cumbria put up a creditable performance in the County Championship before going down 24-18 to Warwickshire at Nuneaton.

It was a re-shaped side who were up against much more experienced opposition and for long periods they did not see enough of the ball.

Warwickshire led 13-3 at half-time with Fylde's Mike Scott putting the Cumbrians on the scoresheet with a penalty. A great break by Martin Armstrong (Kendal) provided Workington winger Alex Walton with a try, which Scott converted.

Scott added a second penalty but Warwickshire had stretched their lead to 24-11 entertaining the final stages when Louw Kruger, Aspatria's South African centre, went in for Cumbria's second try.

n QUEEN Elizabeth School, Kirkby Lonsdale were group winners in a Schools' Under-14s sevens tournament at Keswick organised by new Rugby Development Officer Liam Nicholls.

In the final Keswick dominated Kirkby Lonsdale, who had used a lot of energy in the group games and suffered a little in the final as they were eventually overwhelmed 37-0.
