The 2010 Coppermines Grizedale Stages Rally is the latest sports event to fall victim of the wintry conditions in Cumbria.
The 23rd annual event was due to start from Coniston on Friday night but with 6-8 inches of snow already lying and more forecast towards the end of the week organisers took the agonising decision to cancel the race.
Course clerk Graham Parker said: "The issues are that with it being so steep in some places and a general incline the two wheel drive cars wouldn't get through the stage.
"As much as we wanted the rally to go ahead we had to take the decision to cancel it. We can't get marshalls into position and after walking the course for four and a half hours trying to find alternative routes, it was a very difficult decision."
Mr Parker said that realistically the race had to be postponed until next year because six to eight weeks notice for road closures would have to be given and other events would clash, even if they could get the go ahead.
He added: "This was going to be the 23rd annual running and it has never been cancelled before. We have had snow on the day before and with us having snow lying already it was a bit of a bad dilemma.
"It is not good for Coniston either as it would be bringing in a lot of money with more than 5,000 spectators expected but it is the right decision.
"It is fun for everyone and we want people to enjoy themselves but it would be too dangerous to run."
