RALLY enthusiasts can now enrol for one of Cumbria's most historic motor sports events - and they could even do it on the cheap.
Regulations and entry forms are now available for the 40th Malcolm Wilson Rally, taking place on March 7, 2015.
The event is based at the home of the M-Sport Racing Team, at Dovenby, just outside Cockermouth and is set to attract competitors from around the UK and possibly the world.
It uses stages from the famous Grizedale Forest circuit, widely regarded as some of the best traditional rally routes in the north, and the Whinlatter complex.
Entrants will be excited to know that the Gazette can reveal that, as well as the other stages, a new stage specially designed for 2015 will be unveiled at a later date.
It is the second round of the BTRDA Championship and offers Historic, Rally First and Clubman competitors the chance to test their mettle against a field of national entrants over the same stages.
To celebrate the 40th running of this event, the organisers have decided to charge the 40th entrant the same fee that they would have been made to pay four decades ago during the first ever Lakeland Stages Rally - just £22 plus insurance.
Local crews have taken the title several times over the 40 years with Malcolm Wilson himself winning the event three times.
Kendal’s Bob Green has also recorded his name on the trophy twice while Burton-in-Kendal’s Steve Head has added his once.
