KENDAL failed to take advantage of a one-goal lead and kill off visiting opposition Formby and lost 2-1 in North West division five (North).

The result leaves Kendal more firmly fixed to the bottom of the league - in eighth place out of 11 - a position which does not do justice to some of the team's play this season.

However, a 'goals for' tally of only 19 in 12 games indicates that part of Kendal's problem is not finding the net with sufficient regularity.

Only one team above them has scored fewer and league leaders Brooklands have notched 79 in the same period.

At both 'business ends' of the pitch, Kendal's lapses in concentration have cost them dearly - the team have not kept a clean sheet all season, have not won in 2005 and have conceded two goals in each of their last eight games.

This fixture was no different.

A tight first half, with organised defence and committed tackling, notably from John Elleray, set the scene for Russ Miller to skip past Formby's defence and score a splendid solo goal.

More chances fell to Kendal in Formby's area but shots were either fluffed or sprayed wide.

Formby pushed forward, especially on Kendal's left, and broke with pace through the midfield.

They equalised with a shot under Chacko's body and took the lead, and all three points, by reacting quickly to a short corner which was not cleared.

Wigan 4th.........................2 Windermere.....................0 WINDERMERE Men suffered an unexpected 2-0 defeat on Saturday against a Wigan 4ths side that was barely recognisable as the one they beat 18-0 in early November.

Keen to avenge their NW League Division Nine humiliation at Troutbeck Bridge, Wigan fielded their first team goalkeeper, a player who normally sees action in Northern League Division One, and, after his outstanding display thwarting Windermere's every attempt to score, he explained that his appearance was part of his "rehabilitation" from a shoulder injury.

Windermere had begun the game in fine style, controlling most phases of play as they besieged Wigan's D for long spells, but the home goalkeeper dived, slid across and blocked shots by Sam Crompton, Ed Waterhouse, Andy Harkness, Scott Santamera and Dave Spiby and he successfully 'walled out' a series of short corners by spreading himself across the goal. And when he was finally beaten, the ball was kicked off the line by a defender, and he even saved the resulting penalty flick.

The game was goalless at half time and Windermere carried on dominating play after the interval until Wigan substituted virtually a new forward line in the final quarter and began to catch them on the break with some lively movement.

Wigan took the lead from a short corner and then got a second after a slick interplay, leaving Windermere to ponder the reality of life as league leaders.

Fortunately, results elsewhere went Windermere's way and they are still a point clear of their closest rivals with a game in hand, but they have yet to taste victory in 2005 and the pressure could not be greater for tomorrow's home fixture against Formby 4ths.
