YEALAND Redmayne triathlete Beau Smith has been selected as part of a four-strong team to represent Great Britain at the Elite Under 23 European Triathlon Championships taking place in Holten, Holland at the end of this month.
The 19-year-old’s selection follows his strong performance at the recent European Cup race in Antalya, Turkey, which was one of several consideration events.
The Championships are to be run over the standard Olympic distance, which comprises a 1500m swim, 40k bike and 10k run.
Smith took part in his first triathlon at the age of nine, as a way of using up some of his excess energy, and has been enjoying the sport ever since.
Since then he has worked his way up through the age groups and distances, representing the North West Region three times at the National Inter-Regional Championships before moving into the Junior age category.
During the three years he was in that age group he won the North West Junior Series, the North West Senior Series, and the British Triathlon Junior Super Series.
This year is his first in the Under 23 age category, although European and World Championships aside, all races are at Senior level.
