LAKELAND orienteers took podium places at the prestigious British Orienteering Championships in the Surrey Hills as Sarah Jones won the gold medal in the W18 class.
Carol McNeill took silver in W65 in the individual championships at Winterfield – a mixed area of open heathland and ancient forest.
Other Lakeland OC top 10 placings saw Natalie Beadle finish fourth and Katie Wright fifth in W18; Carrie Beadle was fourth W20; Carl Edmonds was another to finish fourth in M20 as was Jackie Chapman in the W55 class.
Daisy Fletcher-Cooney came home seventh W14; Lois Jefferson was seventh and Hannah Cleary-Hughes ninth in W16; Cliff Etherden eighth and Simon Cane tenth in M65.
Wright, Beadle and Jones teamed up for further success in the following day’s relay championships at Holmbury, a forested greensand ridge with intricate mine workings, taking the W18 gold medals.
Bronze medals were won in W50 (Jackie Chapman, Carol McNeill and Rebekah Beadle) and W14 (Fiona Newby, Megan Bartlett and Heather Ball). Jack Caine, Ryan Smith and Thomas Maddock were fifth team in the M14 class.
