A POOR start and a shaky turnover bumped Tom Young out of qualifying for a place in tonight's (Wednesday) SM8 200m individual medley.
The Newbiggin swimmer got off to a poor start on the first length, the butterfly, after he came up from underwater too soon from the start to leave him last after 50-metres.
Young charged back into contention in the second length, the backstroke, to move from last to second and within one second of the leader.
But his turnover into the breaststroke was poor and he didn't recover during that stroke to fall back down to last again going into the final 50 metres.
He rallied, and desperately tried to get into the top three with the freestyle on the last length, but he finished fourth just eight hundredths of a second behind Evgeny Zimin of Russia.
After all three heats this morning, Young finished 11th fastest and will not swim in tonight's 5.30pm final.
Young's final swim takes place in the S8 100m freestyle tomorrow, with the heats from 11am, and the final at around 7.20pm.
