WINDERMERE Prep School are the new District Tag Rugby Champions after they captured the title at this year’s South Lakes Primary School Tag Rugby Festival.
Twenty-nine teams gathered at Kirkby Lonsdale RUFC for the largest festival yet organised by RFU community rugby coach Garry Holmes and his volunteer helpers.
After a morning of round-robin matches, the group winners and the four best second-placed teams joined battle in the cup competition, while the rest contested plate and shield events.
In the showcase final Windermere Prep met St Mark’s, Natland. As the scores were all square after extra time, the match went to a golden try.
An interception from a Windermere Prep player, who ran almost the full length of the field, set up the winning score.
Stramongate won the shield when beating St Mark’s, Natland B and Dean Gibson took the plate with a victory over St Oswald’s, Burneside.
Holmes said: “The standard was very high and the gap between the better teams and developing teams is getting smaller.”
