ULVERSTON swimming coach Paul Elwood is looking forward to a prosperous new year after being appointed an England Talent coach with British Swimming.

The England Talent programme is aimed at 14-16 year olds and it controls three camps through the year, working as a feeder base for the north west’s Beacon Programme in Manchester - which takes in the top 16 swimmers in the region.

He said: “The Ulverston club gets stronger every year and is top of the north west area league. I have coached the county team this year at Pond Forge in Sheffield and we got our best results for a while.”

Elwood was awarded the coach of the year award at the Cumbria Sports Awards for his commitment to coaching youngsters over the last decade, and he says he plans to continue bringing talented youths through.

He added: “I want to help bring more young swimmers through to a high level but we must look after the younger swimmers who are only 8/9 years old and keep their interest.

“Encouragement and positivity from a young age will help us deliver their talent and make them feel part of a team, which ultimately will help them succeed.”
