A 4-0 DEFEAT was a harsh reward for Kendal Town's efforts again Blue Square North leaders Alfreton Town in the third qualifying round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.

Town compared favourably with their high-flying opponents in a bright start to the first half without getting on the scoresheet.

Chances were few but Ashley Dunn went close when he forced a save of Alfreton keeper Paddy Gamble's legs and Keiran Walmsley shaved a post with a free-kick.

However, an 18th-minute strike from Tony Howell put Alfreton's noses ahead and it remained that way until deep into the second half.

Injuries to Carl Osman and skipper and central defender Glen Steel meant Town boss Lee Ashcroft's hand was forced into substutions with only a single goal between the sides

The balance of the side was affected and Alfreton profited with three goals in 16 minutes from Paul Clayton, Liam Hearn and substitute Nathan Arnold.

Danny McGahon threatened to give Town a late consolation, but was thwarted by a last-ditch tackle as Alfreton - beaten only once in 14 league matches - moved into the Trophy's next round.
