RECORDS Week looks set to remain on Coniston Water after switching from Windermere for the first time this autumn in the wake of the 10mph speed limit.
The event's chairman Robin Brown told The Westmorland Gazette: "We enjoyed Coniston this year, it's ideal for the purpose, it's tied in to record breaking through Donald Campbell and it's the place to be."
Coniston residents also appear to be happy to host Records Week 2006 and the hundreds of power boaters who attend to challenge British and world speed records. Of the 46 villagers who responded to a survey, 83 per cent supported its return while nine per cent said they did not want it back, the rest were undecided.
The final decision rests with the LDNPA but it is thought the cash-strapped authority may be reluctant to put the event back on Windermere. Legal costs would be incurred to change the 10mph limit bylaw to include an exemption for the event.
