AFTER suffering defeat to Burneside last week in the Senior Cup, Sedbergh Wanderers made amends by beating them 4-3 in the Benevolent Trophy this week.

With Sedbergh picking up three more injuries from last week's bruising encounter, they were pleased to welcome back Mike Harrison, Nicky Ross and Trevor Winn.

In a lively start it was Harrison who put Sedbergh ahead, when he latched on to Chris Wheatley's through ball to finish superbly.

Sedbergh's lead was doubled shortly after when Aaron Siemaszko fired in his first goal of the season from 25 yards.

Burneside then switched formation and grabbed two goals back just as quickly through Martin O'Sullivan with some clinical finishing after indifferent defending.

They were then unfortunate not to finish the half in front as a long-range effort struck the post.

Into the second half and Sedbergh again established a two-goal lead. Harrison linked up well with Craig Gardner, who put one in the top corner from a tight angle to make it 3-2, and Simon Parkin scrambled a fourth from a corner.

In fact Harrison could have made it five, when he rounded the keeper only to hit the side netting. This only spurred Burneside on and they won a penalty midway through the half, but Jimmy Ellwood blazed it over.

For the last 20 minutes Burneside pressed hard with Kevin Pickering and Andrew Hayton both hitting the woodwork. They eventually breached the Sedbergh goal when Ellwood threaded the ball through for Pickering to drive home to make it 4-3, but an equaliser would not come in the closing stages and Sedbergh gained their cup revenge.

Kendal County had a comfortable passage through in the Trophy with an 8-2 win over Staveley, who nonetheless did well to hold County to a 2-1 lead just before half time.

Stand-in keeper Shaun Hevey made several good saves and County's forwards were profligate with their chances but had goals from Craig Walmsley's strike from a through ball and a Peter Nicholls' header to their credit before Staveley pulled one back.

That goal was quickly cancelled out when a Kris Clough cross-cum-shot flew into the top corner.

Two goals in a couple of minutes early into the second half gave County the cushion they wanted and it was 8-0 before Staveley got a second, both Clough, Walmsley and Nicholls all getting second goals with Paul Grattan and Shaun Palmer also on the sheet.

Man of the match for County was Ben Haddrick, who continued his improved form with a steady flow of crosses from the flank.

Wetheriggs United saw off Second Division Carvetii United 6-1, going 3-0 up on the half-hour thanks to a Martyn Currie penalty and two goals in quick succession from Steve Hall from close-range shots.

Currie added another early in the second, finishing past the advancing keeper but Carveti cancelled it out with a Keiran Harris goal.

Wetheriggs scored twice more, however, with Andy Robertshaw finishing off a good move and then 16-year-old substitute Keiran Wallace, stepping up from the third team, scoring after making a comeback this season from a badly-broken leg.

Third division Endmoor should not be too disheartened from their 10-1 Trophy defeat by Coniston, who welcomed back several regulars, including sweeper Norman Drinkall, and had a day when everything went right for them.

Hat-tricks for the hard-working forwards Timmy Fletcher and Dave Cooper set the tone but Endmoor, who missed an early chance to go ahead, battled away without the scoreline reflecting their efforts.

After leading 5-0 at half time, Coniston got a quick goal after the break to stay on top and their other scorers were Ben Clarke, Adam McGinley, Toby Hodgkinson and Glen Todd.

Windermere had a walkover against Braith-waite and Milnthorpe Corinthians Reserves lost 4-2 at Penrith United.

Ibis made the best of the mud and wind in the league for a 5-0 winning booster over Carleton Rovers, with goals from Chris Ellwood from Stuart Gilpin's long throw and Mike Packham, who chipped the keeper from 25 yards in the first half.

Carleton were a handful in the heavy conditions and kept Dan Wilkinson busy in goal until a jarred shoulder forced his replacement by Ellwood.

Ibis got a vital third goal early in the second half with Gary Taylor's weaving run setting up Ryan Ormrod to slot home.

Taylor scored himself shortly afterward and supplied the cross for Gary Bowles to round the keeper for the fifth and seal a hard-fought victory if a rather flattering final scoreline.

Liam O'Callaghan was tireless in his work in probing the Carleton defence.
