Commodore Miss Gay Crossley, the fourth generation of her family to hold the post, and the first woman to be commodore in the Royal Windermere Yacht Club's 147-year history, presided over the annual dinner and prize-giving at Windermere Hydro Hotel.
In a toast Harry Thomason stressed the club's long tradition, exemplified by the continuing role of past and current commodores and flag officers in the smooth running of the club, which had made possible the success of versatile champions over the years, such as world champion Flying Fifteen sailors Steve Goacher and Phil Evans.
He said the future of the club rests with the next generation in the Mirror fleet, whose young members have already brought international success and give promise for future championships.
Other speakers stressed the importance of the healthy attitude to competition at all levels, the expertise of Bosun Roger Johnson in setting courses and organizing races, and the willing participation of crews in all sailing conditions from flat calm to strong gales.
