MEDICAL student Joe Symonds, son of famous fell-running father Hugh, went close to breaking the Nine Standards Fell Race record on Bank Holiday Monday - winning just four seconds outside the best-ever run.
He took a prize of a litre of whisky for his trouble, but had to miss out on a £50 cash bonus a record would have brought - saying afterwards he could have pushed harder if he had known how close he was to the time!
TOP finishers: 1 J Symonds, Kendal, 55-19; 2 P Davies, Borrowdale, 57-36; 3 M Denham-Smith, Keswick, 57-37; 4 A Schofield, Borrowdale, 58-13; 5 C Doyle, Trafford, 1-00-09; 6 A Labram, Eden Runners, 1-00-52.
