JUDO: Members of Kendal Judo Club were called upon by Lancashire Judo to help them out in the annual Battle of the Roses Judo Tournament held at Preston Guild Hall.
Several teams fought out this hotly-contested tournament, which is held alternately in Lancashire and Yorkshire each year.
Team selections are based on age ranges and in the Cadet Girls, Laura Hogg (pictured below left) easily overcame her Yorkshire opponent, Danielle Batchelor, with a strangle to help her team to an 8-5 victory.
In the Cadet Boys, Laura's brother Nathan also saw off his opponent with an ippon throw despite having to fight up a weight against a Yorkshire boy over five kilos heavier.
Michael Horley fought in two age bands. In the Cadets he won with an inner-leg throw and followed the throw with an armlock for a submission. He then moved up an age band to the Juniors where he beat Simon Durston with his favourite inner-leg throw and followed that with a 20-second hold for the win.
In the same team Danny Harper produced one of the throws of the day with a shoulder wheel for ippon and helped the team to a 6-1 victory.
The Senior Men's contest was closely fought. Steven Rogan won on a golden score after tying with James Hunter at full time and his brother Philip Rogan (below right), fighting up a weight from under-60 kilos to under-66, held Nicholas Montgomery for the full 25 seconds to help Lancashire to a victory which went to the last seconds of the last contest.
