TIME is running out for trekking enthusiasts to complete the Lake District 50k challenge - and help mark a half century milestone into the bargain.

The gauntlet was thrown down in spring to regulars on the Lake District National Park Authority's guided walks to notch-up 50 kilometres and win themselves a commemorative card and badge.

The challenge was just one of a number of events this year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the National Park's Voluntary Warden Service. First past the 50k finishing post were Morecambe walking zealots Roy and Annette Waring, who completed the marathon in just 21 days.

Regular and diverse guided walks throughout the season feature in the LDNPA's events guide. As winter closes in, education and events manager Brenda Fishwick has called all contenders in the 50k challenge to complete the course and apply for certificates.

"Although the last guided walk is in December, they gradually tail off by the end of October," said Ms Fishwick.

"As we still have plenty of badges and cards left for those who have covered the distance, we would like to hear from anyone who is nearing the 50k goal."
