SEDBERGH School is celebrating 125 years of rugby this season and the highlight of many events organised occurs this weekend.

On Friday, some 200 Old Sedberghians, governors, staff and guests gather for a private 125th anniversary dinner. Present will be numerous former internationals and British Lions, Logie Bruce Lockhart (Scotland) and John Spencer (England, Lions & RFU Committee), although perhaps the most famous guest will be the Rugby World Cup!

The school has a proud history in rugby, having produced seven Lions and 31 internationals - nine of whom captained their country, while at schoolboy level they have produced no fewer than 53 internationals.

On Saturday a remarkable 15 schoolboy matches will take place on the school pitches, all against Ampleforth College from Yorkshire.

Like Sedbergh, Ampleforth has a fine reputation at rugby with Lawrence Dalaglio numbering among its alumni, and it is fitting that two of the most famous schools in the country should meet on this weekend.
