WESTMORLAND Senior Cup action dominated the local football scene at the weekend with most team involved in first round action.

Burneside came back from a goal down for a 2-1 victory at Arnside, who caught the visitors napping with a one-two played around the defensive wall for Mark Smith to drill the ball home.

For the remainder of the first half played in torrential rain, Burneside forced the play and were rewarded with a low driven shot from Martin O'Sullivan that an Arnside player turned into his own net.

Burneside kept on top in the second half and hit both posts with young Will Gunning and evergreen O'Sullivan proving a handful.

The pressure brought a winning goal when Leigh Ellwood's long-range shot was parried by the Arnside keeper into the path of O'Sullivan, who slotted home Substitute striker Paul McKnight, returning from long-term injury, hit the bar direct from a corner.

A scare near the end brought a good reaction save from Burneside keeper Paul McCullough.

With three key first-team players missing, Lunesdale took a mixture of youth and experience to First Division side Carleton Rovers.

Veteran Chris Farrell was solid at the back and 15-year-old Mike Wilson worked hard up front. After a near-miss from from a header for Carleton, Lunesdale took the lead after 32 minutes when Johnny Lowis drilled in a low shot off the post.

Sid Emerson went close when he shot inches wide going up to half time.

In the second half resolute defending and an inspired display from Eric Capstick in goal kept the 1-0 lead intact and allow Second Division Lunesdale to progress to the second round.

Kendal Town Reserves met Ibis and the early exchanges were fairly even with both teams playing good football.

Things changed on 25 minutes, however, when Town had Jamie Wilson sent off for what the referee thought was a dangerous challenge, and it gave Ibis the initiative until half time.

Tenman Kendal Town reorganised and took the game to Ibis in the second half and their hard work paid off when Adam Towler, his side's man of the match, latched on to a cross from Lee McNeill to steer the ball home.

The side then worked hard to preserve their narrow lead up to the final whistle.

Staveley beat West Lancs side Milnthorpe Corinth -ians 6-3 on penalties after the sides had finished at 1-1.

In an open first half, Staveley missed a penalty before going ahead with a header. Corinthians levelled the score when good work by Waddington ended with the ball nodded for Walsh to smash home.

Corinthians should have gone on to win and thought they had when a Brooks shot appeared to cross the line, but play was waved on and the match went to penalties, Staveley scoring all of theirs to go through.

Appleby are not playing their best football but they progressed in the cup with a 2-1 home win over Windermere after extra time.

After a scoreless first half, Windermere opened the scoring and Appleby keeper Paul Crawford made a couple of stunning saves - including a point-blank one from Andy Ford - to keep them in this first-round tie.

Windermere had a player sent off for foul language and Appleby used the extra man advantage to draw level when Nicky Slee ran from the halfway line to score with an unstoppable shot into the far corner. In extra time Appleby produced the winner when John Coward scored from inside the penalty box after hand-ball appeals from Windermere were waved aside by the referee.

First Division Coniston had little trouble disposing of Second Division Dent. Despite home advantage Dent were unable to score as their opponents rattled in seven goals.

Westmorland League champions Wetheriggs United also had no first round problems with a 4-0 victory over West Lancashire League First Division side Burton Thistle.

Sedbergh Wanderers, who have made a good start to their league campaign, surprisingly came unstuck in the cup against First Division strugglers Penrith Rangers, losing 4-1.

Kendal County got back on track in the league after their Invitation Trophy defeat with a 6-1 victory over Ambleside.Peter Nicholls scored twice as County racked up a 5-0 half-time lead with other goals coming from Shaun Palmer, Ollie Wilson and Kris Klough.

County became lacklustre afterwards and their only addition to the score came from Ben Haddrick which cancelled out an Ambleside con solation effort.
