Kendal Town5 Woodley Sports.1 ALMOST predictably Kendal's roller-coaster season hit a new high on Tuesday to balance Saturday's low.

Five goals were hammered in as Town soared above Woodley in the UniBond League First Division table and it could easily have been ten, such was Kendal's dominance of large sections of the game.

It started from the very first minute when a 25-yard free-kick was floated deep across the Woodley box by right-back Paul Rigby and Dene Whittal-Williams rose at the back post to head past keeper Dale Newbrook.

Veteran Peter Smith worked tirelessly down the right wing and produced several telling crosses into the box and it was against the run of play that Woodley equalised on 32 minutes.

The visitors' attacks had been largely confined to long-range shots by a well marshalled defence, but a momentary lapse saw a badly-directed clearance header from left-back Russ McKenna hit midfielder Dave Woodruffe's back and fall for Woodley's Russell Headley to net from four yards.

Three minutes later Town restored their advantage when Kenny Mayers played a diagonal ball between the full-backs and Lee Ashcroft celebrated his return from suspension by dashing in to blast the ball home.

Ricky Mercer picked up a yellow card for a clumsy challenge, but Town went in to half-time well content with the first 45 minutes.

Early in the second half McKenna hit the post from a Dave Foster cross, then in the 54th minute Nigel Taylor hammered a 20-yard free-kick round the edge of the Woodley wall and inside the left hand post for 3-1.

Minutes later Foster beat the offside trap, but slid the ball just wide with only the keeper to beat. Mayers then saw a shot hit the bar only for Foster to squander another chance from the rebound.

The striker finally got the goal he deserved in the 72nd minute when an excellent long ball over the top by McKenna presented him with a one-on-one chance in centre field.

Foster had time to pick his spot and direct the ball inside the right hand post.

Foster and substitute Michael Jack had further chances before Ashcroft rounded off the scoring in added time, cutting in and striking a classy curving 25-yarder round a defender and the keeper.

How they rated: Thornley 7, Rigby 8, McKenna 8, Whittal-Williams 7, Taylor 8 (Burrow 6 from 76min), Mercer 7 (Jack 7 from 76min), Smith 8, Woodruffe 6, Foster 7, Mayers 7, Ashcroft 8.
