KENDAL Town Reserves went to the top of the first division table in the Talbot Insurance Westmorland League when taking a point from a goalless draw at Coniston on Saturday's weather-hit programme.
Town lead Kendal County on goal difference, but Town manager Andy Major was disappointed not to have clinched the win.
In an evenly-fought first half at Shepherd's Bridge there were few scoring chances for either side.
Kendal became the much more prominent side in the second half, but will look back on this game and wonder how they never scored.
Many chances were created but poor finishing and a forthright penalty appeal that was turned down conspired against them.
Major said: "We should never have been relying on a last-minute penalty. We have only got ourselves to blame for missing so many scoring opportunities. The team under-achieved and we all know it."
Windermere took a tenacious point in a 3-3 draw with Penrith Reserves.
Starting smartly, Winder-mere had chances from Andy Ford and Jamie Parkinson only for Penrith to go ahead after 20 minutes when a defensive lapse let a forward in to shoot home.
Ten minutes later a headed in cross from the Penrith wing brought a second goal.
Callum Thwaites remedied the situation five minutes before the end of the first half, cutting in and unleashing a bending shot from 25 yards that went in off the inside of the post to make it 2-1.
Ten minutes into the second half, Rangers made it 3-1, despite a strong suspicion of offside about the goal.
Windermere's never-say-die attitude kicked in and a defensive mistake let the quick-thinking Thwaites nip in to take the ball and fire in.
Windermere had what looked a perfectly acceptable goal disallowed, but five minutes later a free kick into the box found Mike Laidler, who lobbed his shot over the keeper for 3-3.
Ibis mounted a spirited second-half comeback and were unfortunate not to come away with anything in a 4-3 home defeat by Carleton Rovers.
Not at their best in the first half, Ibis found themselves 2-0 down at the break and when that became 3-0 the game looked to be beyond them.
They threw caution to the wind and levelled the scores, striker Chris Ellwood bagging a couple, substitute Dan Wilkinson wasalso on target.
Failure to clear their lines then cost them as Carleton sneaked a late winner.
Two late goals brought Appleby a welcome 3-1 over Keswick. Appleby took an early lead when David Nugent headed home a cross.
Keswick quickly equalised and there was no further score until sub Paul Kinner came on and rounded the Keswick keeper. Tony Johnson wrapped the game up when he was left unmarked in the box.
Kendal County's away match at Ambleside was called off because of a waterlogged pitch.
In Division Two, new transfer Jimmy Ellwood scored twice and Martin O'Sullivan (2) and Lee Ellwood also netted as Burneside turned a 2-0 interval deficit into a 5-2 victory at Lunesdale.
Victoria SC gained their second win in four attempts with a 2-1 victory over Kirkoswald.
Stand-in defender Damian Savage was outstanding at the back and also set up Brian McKenna for Vics' opening goal. It became 2-0 up when Alexander Barazens finished a strong run with a fine shot, having rattled the post minutes earlier.
The powerful wind was in Kirkoswald's favour in the second half and they monopolised play, pulling a goal back with an unstoppable strike from just over the halfway line.
Vics were fortunate to collect three points but had done enough in the first half to deserve it.
Kendal County Reserves ran out 9-1 winners at home to Keswick. All of their goals came before half time, so they actually lost the second half! Simon Park, Richard Lopez and Anthony Pearce each scored twice.
n Kendal County and Wetheriggs United will try to play the Westmorland FA Invitation Trophy final at Parkside Road this Wednesday, a week after a waterlogged pitch forced a postponement.
County will also represent the Westmorland FA away to North Riding in the Northern Counties competition on October 16.
