CYCLING: Staveley rider Neecol Barlow was first woman in the 70k 8th annual 'End to End' race on the Isle of Man, regaining the title she took last year in a time of 5hr 5min.
After struggling with a hunger "knock" in the latter stage, Wheelbase rider Paul Trott, from Kendal, hung on for third (3hr 27min) in the men's race behind professional and locally-based winner Stephen Roach.
Wind and rain dominated the weekend's time trials. Nearly all the riders in Kent Valley Road Club's 10 miles time trial on the Levens course on Saturday had to endure torrential outbursts of rain, while riders in Sunday's Wigan Wheelers 25 at Garstang had to battle with near gale-force westerly winds.
Saturday's event was won by Preston's Gethin Butler in 20-29 and local times in a depleted field were led by first man off Ian Padley with 23-38. Other times were Anne Plant of Ulverston 24-53; Tony Dixon 25-26; Karl Hutchinson 26-00; Bob Bagot 26-13 and Bruce Barnes 28-06.
Sunday's event, won by North Lancs RC's Stuart Whitehead in 56-52, also drew a depleted field. Ian Padley rode 1-06-50 and Tony Dixon did 1-7-28.
