THIRTEEN-year-old Katie Heginbotham, from Helm Mount Farm, Barrows Green, had a memorable win in the Red Rosette Event Pony competition at Burghley Horse Trials.
Katie was riding 12-year-old Wrayton Monty and gave a polished performance, putting him through his dressage paces and over a round of big jumps as part of this newish event aimed at finding a pony suitable for eventing. writes Malcolm Bewsher.
Katie's efforts won her the Under-13hh Event Pony and she was Reserve Champion.
She qualified Monty at Myerscough College before booking her Burghley ticket with success at the Ponies UK Summer Championships.
Her parents Angela and Clive were delighted to see Katie, who attends Queen Elizabeth School in Kirkby Losndale, beat some of the best ponies in the country.
They all had the opportunity of watching some of the Olympic riders, including individual bronze and team silver medallist, Pippa Funnell in action.
Wrayton Monty, by Desarbe Nightfighter out of Wrayton Jolanta, was bred by Stanley Metcalfe of Kendal.
Katie also had a win in the Colne working hunter with Monty and clinched a second and reserve champion at the Horse Of The Year qualifier with Cosmospolitan at the Ponies UK Summer Championships.
She is now looking forward to the finals at the end of the month at the HOTYS at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham.
Monty was also ridden by Katie's younger brother William at Lowther where he was reserve mini champion.
n Samantha Magennis from Ambleside was the sole rider representing Oxenholme Pony Club at the National Championships when she finished runner-up in the 57-starter individual show jumping on Birchwood Belle and received a new bridle as her prize.
Samantha had represented Great Britain at the Pony European Eventing Championships in Poland with her pony Baydale Velvet and finished with a good fourth team placing.
Despite a fall on the tough cross country course she finished 33rd overall, a great achievement for the area and for the club.
n Babs Ruchwaldy, from The Yealand Stud, was highly delighted when homebred ponies by her stallions Bottingetle Swansong and the late Yealand Night Owl qualified for the prestigious Horse Of The Year Show.
In the show hunter pony sections she will be well represented with Polly Shaw (Yealand Juliet) and Alex Weaver (Yealand Strike It Lucky) top winners at the Scottish Horse Show.
Alex also rides Yealand Solitude, which qualified at the NPS Area 5, along with Samantha Coates (Yealand Chapter).
Kate Chambers (Yealand Quixotic) won the intermediate and reserve champion at the Scottish Horse while Emma Boardman rides her East of England winner Yealand Quintessaence, third at the Scottish, in the ridden hack section.
Others going forward are Yealand Twite, Preacherman and Presbertery.
Casterton School teacher Anne Rigby is also pleased with her homebred Dartmoor pony Dykes Rosiemead, ridden by Alexandra Hollings, which qualified for Birmingham in the first ridden Mountain and Moorland section at the East Anglian Native Show.
n Louise Stanley, from Endmoor, was runner-up in the lightweight cobs at Scottish Horse Show riding Nacavity ahead of Crosthwaite's Gill Gale riding Ellistown Duchess. Gill was also delighted when Simon Reynolds won the hunter class with Ozzy Spring.
n Kendal owner Sheila Hensman' granddaughter Victoria Simpson finished second in the Scottish Novice Horse Trials Championship at Thiriestane Castle, riding Auburn Hill.
