A RECORD number of young athletes from Kendal AAC received medals after competing in the final Cumbria League match at Salt Ayre track at Lancaster on Saturday.
After this "medals match" individual performances over all four league matches were used to decide overall medals in individual events.
There were U11 silver medals for David Spragg for the boys 70m sprint, to Ashleigh Kennedy for both the girls 70m and the long jump and to her sister Georgia for the 600m.
Rachael Kirk achieved a 600m bronze following a fine winning run on the day.
The U11 girls 4 x 100m relay team took gold and the U11 boys and girls teams received the shield for the most league points scored in the age group for the first time in many years.
In the U13s Chris Caulcrick gained a silver in the shot put and a bronze in the 80m.
Aaron Screen was delighted with the overall bronze for the 800m after a good second-placed run on the day.
Brother and sister, Iain and Judith Burrow took three U15 gold medals between them - Iain's came in discus and javelin and Judith's in the long jump.
Rayna Coulson collected an U17 long jump gold.
In the match itself, there were further good performances by Francesca Ward (6th, long jump) and Daniel Craig (5th, 600m) in the U11s.
Matthew Lishman and Kelly Dickson both reached finals on their debuts in the U13 80m and 150m sprints, withMatthew gaining second places in both.
Two recent recruits, Hannah Mitchell and Thomas Matthews, were also U15 sprint finalists and Imogen Reekie was second in the high jump at this age group.
Following a three-week break, winter training commences on Tuesday, September 21 at Queen Katherine School sportshall, 6pm to 7pm, for both groups, U11 to U13 (min. age 9) and U15 to U20.
Any youngsters inspired by the Olympics are invited to come along to a session to give it a try.
