STRIKER Lee Ashcroft netted twice on his debut as Kendal maintained their 100 per cent record with a comfortable 4-0 win at Warrington.

After making heavy weather of their opening day victory over Stocksbridge, Town might have expected to struggle against ambitious newcomers Warrington, who beat experienced UniBond League outfit Belper Town 3-0 on Saturday.

In the event those worries were banished from the first minute when Saturday's hat-trick hero Kenny Mayers showed his keen eye for goal by heading home Russ McKenna's inswinging corner kick.

The home side struggled to match Kendal's tempo and Ashcroft's persistant and clever movement off the ball was soon causing major problems for the Warrington defence.

The former Preston North End star had two efforts which went marginally wide either side of a header which was hacked off the goal line as Kendal looked to double their lead.

The home side's only chance of the half came on 42 minutes and it required a good block from Kendal goalkeeper Mark Thornley, who did well to close down advancing striker Ben Obong.

Kendal's dominance was rewarded two minutes later when centre-half Nigel Taylor's thunderous free-kick came back off the post with goalkeeper Kevin Whitehead beaten and it was Ashcroft who reacted first to convert the loose ball.

The second half was a similar story with Warrington failing to penetrate the solid Kendal defence and the outcome was virtually settled in the 72nd minute when McKenna played a neat one-two with Mayers before firing the ball under Whitehead for 3-0.

Two minutes from time man of the match Ashcroft showed his class when he cleverly brought down a pass from McKenna then lobbed Whitehead to round off a promising team performance.

How they rated: Thornley (3); Rigby (8), Burrow (8), Taylor (3), McMenemy (8); Smith (8); Woodruffe (8); Whittal-Williams (8), McKenna; Mayers (8); Ashcroft (9).
