VILLAGERS in Beetham had a wonderful day for their annual sports that attracted nearly 2,000 people.
In the senior races, Harvey Gott ran a splendid 1,600 metres, and overall champion of the day was Mark McMahon from Carlisle, who was presented with the Bill Batty memorial rose bowl by Mrs Tryon-Wilson.
The five mile fell race that takes in the surrounding Beetham countryside and involves a climb up through the Fairy Steps a local landmark - attracted athletes from all over England, with a new course record set by winner Chris Livesey. First lady was Tricia Sloane, and second place was also the first veteran, Mark Aspinall of Clayton-le-Moors. There were 71 runners in total.
