AFTER a six-week mid-season break the New Era Superclub Championship restarted with a bang at Snetterton, Norfolk.

And South Lakes motorcycle racer Glyn Ormerod, from Burton-in-Kendal, was determined to regain his position as championship leader.

As heavy rain clouds gathered over the circuit Ormerod set the pace with successive fastest laps to secure pole positions in his races.

The first race on Saturday was a keen contest between Ormerod and current leader Rick Ellis. Unable to break away from Ellis on the fastest sections of the course, Ormerod's superb technique round the sweeping curves and tight chicanes held the lead until Ellis crashed out and he swept to an impressive win.

In Saturday's second race the Burton rider was challenged for the lead by Steve Tomes but refused to buckle under the pressure and powered his way through to his second win of the day.

The weather on Sunday was more settled and the other results were working in his favour Ormerod was confident his title challenge was back on track.

Race one went according to plan again and Glyn set the pace, broke away from his pursuers and scored a comfortable win.

Race two, however, saw Ormerod and Tomes contesting the lead at every corner. In a breath-taking last lap Tomes took the lead only to see his rival sweep past in an audacious move up the inside on the last corner, storm to a fourth win, and an impressive clean sweep of victories over the two days.

There are no easy races in what is one of British racing's most prestigious championships and this outstanding performance means Ormerod now holds a slender nine-point lead at the top of the table.

The weekend was especially emotional for him as he dedicated his victories in memory of his late mother on the anniversary of her death.

Round 8 of the Championship is at Oulton Park, Cheshire on Saturday, August 7.
