ALTHOUGH the first of the six Tuesday evening Lanequest events was on tarmac many competitiors chose mountain bikes to handle the steep hills around Hawkshead.
The area stretched from Clappersgate to Grizedale and Sawrey, creating a major challenge to collect the 30 controls in two hours.
Paul Trott, winner of the series in 2003, came out top with 28 controls and 30 seconds to spare.
Paul Allen, in good form and already warmed up from a cycle from Kendal, was second with 27.
Next week the event is from the New Holly Hotel, A6 2miles south of J33 on M6.
