COMPETING for the Calgarth & Westmorland trophies, 14 yachts from the Royal Windermere Yacht Club's 17-foot class started in the south lake on a sunny day with a southwesterly wind.
Chas Ingham's Chameleon and Gay Crossley's Whisper put in an early tack to the west and established a reasonable lead over the fleet, Whisper just leading round Beech Hill from Chameleon with Mark Ormerod's Pilgrim third.
There was a lot of place changing in the middle of the fleet with Mike Walsh's Rhythm, Paul Harkness and Jeff Houghton's Naiad and Jim and Judith Hoyle's Nepenthe changing places several times, Naiad eventually finishing fourth in the Classic fleet.
On the last beat to Beech Hill, Pilgrim gained second place with John Curtis' Deva closing a large gap to be a close fourth.
Chameleon won comfortably with Pilgrim second and Deva pipping Whisper on the line by half-a-length to be third overall and first classic yacht with Whisper second and James Nield's Amira third.
n A SOUTH-WESTERLY breeze on Saturday gave the Royal Windermere Yacht Club's Flying Fifteen fleet the opportunity for a longer south lake course Early in the beat boats used the lake's full width before finding the best breeze down the centre. Bev Armer and Andrew Whitehead in Ffidget came through to clear the Beech Hill mark from David Brockbank and Rob Parfitt in Five and Frank Kelly and Brian Garvey in Fiscal Folly.
Ffidget maintained and increased the lead in a long, testing spinnaker reach to Sandy Nab, and on to the Seals turning mark, but then tacked to the middle of the lake, while Five and Fiscal Folly kept towards the west shore and picked up a stronger breeze to reach Temple comfortably ahead.
The boat order remained the same over the final triangle.
On Sunday boats took long tacks across the south lake and Frank Kelly and Carole Berry in Fiscal Folly rounded the first mark ahead of Michael Bentley and David Hawkes in Folly, followed at a distance by the fleet led by Eric and David Stutchfield in Freyja.
On the approach to Ferry, Andrew Kirk and Litton Ledger in Zephyr, Doug and Joyce Cartwright in Ffor Joy and Graham Murray and Paul Haslam in Fever, picked up a breeze from the west to follow Fiscal Folly and Folly on to the second beat.
Freyja was third at the second rounding of Graythwaite, but held on to an east shore line whereas Zephyr and Fever again crossed from the west to slip round the mark ahead. One of the most enjoyable races of the season so far ended with a convincing win for Fiscal Folly, with Folly second and Zephyr third.
Results: Saturday: 1 D. Brockbank & R. Parfitt, Five; 2 F. Kelly & B. Garvey, Fiscal Folly; 3 B. Armer & A. Whitehead, Ffidget. Sunday: 1 F. Kelly & C. Berry, Fiscal Folly; 2 M. Bentley & D. Hawkes, Folly; 3 A. Kirk & L. Ledger, Zephyr.
n A GUSTING westerly wind allowed planing conditions on the upwind leg for Killington Windsurfers and there was a lot of jostling for a good start position with several minor incidents and collisions.
Bill Davison took a course close to the wind, which paid off on the first race.
John Pawson took a broader upwind course in subsequent races as the wind picked up and was able to get planing, beating Davidson to the windward mark to be the clear winner of an excellent evening's racing.
Overall Result: 1 J. Pawson, 2 B. Davison, 3 D. Jackson.
