ULVERSTON'S Chris Doyle got within two minutes of the men's record when winning the six-mile Caw Fell Race from the Blacksmiths Arms at Broughton Mills, writes Mike Addison.
The 18-year-old led home Cumberland Fell Runners' Brian Thompson by 53 seconds although the latter was able to console himself with the fact he was first veteran.
Kendal's Phil Whiting had an excellent run to finish fifth and second veteran ahead of young Ricky Lightfoot (CFR).
But the biggest achievement of the night was CFR's Jackie Hargreaves who sliced four minutes off Helen Diamantides's 1995 record and the new mark is now 56-27.
There was a field of 68 runners and the conditions underfoot were good as the bracken is still very low at this time of year.

n ROB Jebb was beaten into second place by his Bingley team mate Ian Holmes in the nine-mile Coniston Fell Race which was again blessed with sunny weather.
Jebb established an early lead and was well clear at Swirl How but a combination of a "bad leg" from the Three Peaks and Holmes's impressive descending saw him lose his advantage just before Miner's bridge. Holmes finished half a minute clear.
Lady veterans filled the top three spots with Calder Valley's Sally Newman (40th), CFR's Kate Beatty (41st) and Borrowdale's Nicola Davies (58th) having impressive runs. Ever-present Harry Catlow, of Storth, won the vet 70 prize the day before his 72nd birthday.

n ROB Jebb, got the better of a tussle with Simon Booth in Sunday's Buttermere Sailbeck Horseshoe. Jebb, the Bingley Harrier who lives in Staveley, was with Booth, the Borrowdale Fell runner, about a third of the way into the race coming off Aard Cargs to the landmark called the "Purple Pass" and then pulled away going up Causey Pike, from where he hung on to the finish.
Jebb clocked 1hr 29min 15sec and finished 63 seconds clear over the 9.4-mile circuit which contained 4,250 feet of climbing.
Kate Beattie (1-49-27), Cumberland Fell Runners, was the first woman, finishing four and a half minutes ahead of Keswick's Louise Sharp (1-54-04), who lives in Kendal.
