THE search to find the award winners for the Cumbria Sports Awards 2009 ends at midnight on Friday (October 23).

Last year the county’s top sporting honour of Sports Personality of the Year went to Cumbrian racing driver Oliver Turvey, who was also named Formula 3 driver of the year by the Racing Steps Foundation.

Previous winners include Scott Carson, the Whitehaven-born goalkeeper, Lions and England rugby union winger Mark Cueto, cricketer Paul Nixon, rally ace Malcolm Wilson and speedway rider Carl Stonehewer.

A Cumbria Sports spokesman said: “We are looking for heroes for awards in 12 categories that recognise various levels of sporting success, in addition to the support services of administration and coaching.

“The nominations are open to anyone who you feel who has achieved great things in sport locally or who has made a huge voluntary contribution to sport in Cumbria during 2009.”

Nomination forms are available from branches of the Cumberland Building Society, from www.cumbriasport.com or by contacting Cumbria Sport Partnership on 01228 226885.

They should be returned to Cumbria Sport Partnership, 5 Portland Square, Carlisle, CA1 1PU.

The annual awards are presented at a presentation dinner at the Low Wood Hotel, Windermere. Tickets for the event, which is on the November 27 are £25 and available by contacting the organisers Cumbria Sport Partnership on 01228 226885.
