THE 2004 Malcolm Wilson Rally which runs through the Lake District's northern forests on Saturday week has attracted a bumper entry with the cream of British rallying attempting to get among the trophies.
Event regulars and three-times winner Steve Petch returns to do battle with Brian Bell, Steve Perez, the Squire brothers and John Bannister to name just a few.
With the stages in the Whinlatter and Grizedale forests in superb condition, a high-profile start from Cockermouth's Main Street and the improved competitors' safety offered by using the Rallitrak communications system, the stage looks set for a memorable event.
Local crews include Appleby's Dougi Hall, Grizedale's David Shuttleworth, Kendal's Bob Green, Ambleside's Graham Gaskell and Staveley father-and-son David and Ed Meek.
This year's event will be the second round of the BTRDA-organised Dunlop Gold Star Rally Championship, which includes the Dunlop Gold Star (open to all vehicles over 1400cc), the Dunlop silver Star (for two-wheel drive cars over 1400cc) and the Silkolene 1400 Championship, which includes the Peugeot 1400 Challenge for vehicles up to 1400cc.
Last year's winner, event sponsor Malcolm Wilson, put his name on the winner's roll for the third time and provided his son Matthew with an insight into the sport after his experience in circuit racing.
