Kendal Men took six points from two important home games last weekend, against Leyland Foxes and Liverpool Sefton in North West division five (North).
In beating Leyland 2-1, Kendal played a passing game the unbalanced away side could not match.
Short corner routines that have become increasingly slick over the season paid dividends as Young struck his first goal of the match.
Leyland's centre-forward, scored a breakaway goal, shooting through a defender and then the goalkeeper's legs.
Kendal made far more chances than Leyland and Young took his second goal well, but the team were disappointed not to have shown their superiority with more goals.
Against Liverpool Sefton Kendal got off to the best possible start when Young scored his third of the weekend within 30 seconds, following good pressuring work by Santamara on the left wing.
At times, Kendal's hockey flowed brilliantly, but simple passes were too often ignored.
John Elleray was again conspicuous in defence, as Liverpool were allowed back into the game and eventually levelled.
Kendal secured the points with a superbly executed move when the ball travelled from the defence, Bradshaw finding Bloxham who charged to the edge of the area. He slipped it to Barclay for a return pass that wrong-footed the defence and Bloxham swept the ball past the keeper.
WITH just one game to play in the Netherwood League Kendal Ladies consolidated their place at the top of the table with a 4-1 victory over Lancaster.
Just before half-time Lancaster scored after a lapse in marking, but Kendal came out after half-time determined to move the game up a notch.
Within 10 minutes Julie Ashworth picked up a rebound from the goalkeeper, rounded a defender and slotted the ball home. Sarah Brooks then made the score 2-1, after collecting a good pass from Julie Ashworth. Minutes later Sarah Brooks put an aerial ball into the net.
Lancaster tried to reply but a much more organised defence of Helen Hartley, Claire Martin and Nicola Martindale kept the forwards frustrated while keeper Holly Price cleared any loose balls.
Joanne Martin made numerous penetrating drives through the Lancaster team.
Kendal passed the ball well and the fourth goal came when the ball was deflected into the net from a Trudy Luttrell strike. Kendal halves, Sarah Dent, Joanne Martin, Claire Howarth and Charlotte Russell kept the ball moving well while forwards Louise Whiteley and Alice Mullin worried Lancaster with well- placed moves.
ULVERSTON Ladies met Keswick in the Cumbria League and won 5-0 .
Without a match the previous week, Ulverston were ready for a hard match and during the first 15 minutes, Keswick did not get a look in.
Ulverston's first goal came when Lynn Fitzwilliam pulled the ball back for Rachel Smith to slam it into the net.
After 20 minutes Ulverston produced their best move of the game. Helen Wright took a free hit on the Ulverston 25-yard line switching play to the left where Lynn Fitzwilliam gave a first touch pass to Paula Eddy. Eddy dodged a defender to pass to Smith who slammed the ball goalwards A good save was made by the keeper, but she was beaten by Eddy on the rebound.
Ulverston's next goal came when Ulrike Jones set up a passing move which ended with Fitzwilliam netting a rebound from a Keswick defender.
In the second half Ulverston used width, with good passes from Jones, Ulverston's player of the match, and Danni Haines. This resulted in Smith having another shot on goal with Eddy again netting the rebound.
With little time left, Jones passed to Haines who delivered a powerful shot that left the keeper standing.
GLAXO Ladies could field only 10 players for their Cumbria League match and Ambleside, who fielded their strongest side for a few weeks, took advantage to run out 10-0 victors.
In the 7th minute Louise Hartley followed up a penalty corner strike to push the ball in and two minutes later Jennie Dacre scored a second from open play.
A powerful free hit from the right was touched home by Amanda Faulkner for the third goal and Louise Hartley added a fourth from open play.
Hartley completed her hat- trick by jinking round the goalie before Cathy Hollis struck home a powerful shot from a penalty corner to make it 6-0 at half-time.
In the second half Claire Munday scored from open play then Dacre was on hand to score from close range. Helen Murgatroyd then collected a cross and pushed the ball over the line.
Finally Ambleside were awarded a penalty flick which Amanda Faulkner converted.
Although only having 10 players Glaxo produced some fine hockey in defence and midfield.
On Sunday Ambleside travelled to Cockermouth with a younger side to play against a full strength Keswick team for a Netherwood League match.
Keswick were first to capitalise when they converted a penalty corner. It took Ambleside only one minute to reply when Helen Thomas' shot from a penalty corner was deflected by a defender high into the air and dropped into the goal.
Keswick scored twice more from open play, but Ambleside reduced the lead to 3-2 when Helen Thomas' quickly-taken free hit from the right was met by Claire Munday.
Player of the match was Bryoni Bland, 12, who was making her debut in goal for Ambleside in a senior match.
She made some excellent saves to keep her side in the game at the half way stage.
Keswick pick up the pace in the second half, however, and added five goals to make the final score 8-2.
Ambleside's youngsters were by no means overwhelmed, with Lauren Belk having a solid game as sweeper. Lucy Mackereth and Rachel Wilson also defended well, while Lauren Rowlinson and Lauren Wright contributed to some fine attacks for Ambleside.
