THE RUGBY World Cup began its journey around the country on Thursday as further details emerged about the activities planned to mark the arrival of the trophy in Kendal on Saturday, February 21.
Mike Tindall of Bath Rugby and England's Rugby World Cup winning side started the four-month Sweet Chariot Tour' of the Webb Ellis Cup by flying with the trophy in a Harrier jet into RAF Cosford.
It will be on display at Queen Katherine School, off Appleby Road, in Kendal from 10am to 12 noon on February 21.
As part of the visit there will be 'Come and Try' activities aimed all all ages overseen by qualified coaches, including a goal-kicking competition which offers the chance to emulate England fly-half Jonny Wilkinson's famous last-gasp winner over Australia in the World Cup final in Sydney.
In an attempt to use the event to foster more participation in the sport, the organisers are also inviting teams from South Lakeland's schools to take part in an Under-12 mixed tag and Under-15 girls tag competitions on the day.
Representatives of the local referees society will also be present to answer questions about how to become an official. There will also be the opportunity to have photographs taken with the cup, which is in the county for three days.
