CUMBERLAND staged a good batting recovery after a poor start on the opening day of their Minor Counties Championship match against Cambridgeshire on Sunday.
Playing at March cc, Cumberland were reduced to 51-4 but rallied to complete thier first innings with a total of 240.
James Smith (68) and James cole (48) led the fightback, with Ajaz Akhtar (3-31) and Jamie Smith (3-59) taking the bowling honours for the hosts.
Cambridgeshire were 110-1 in reply after 33 overs at the close of play.
Gary Frear stood an 80 not out.
Cumberland team team manager Ian Sharp said: "I was pleased with the way the middle-order batsmen battle and showed character after we were 51-4.
"We are a strike bowler light, so the two spinners will have plenty of work, and it is a very important session in the morning to try to ensure that Cambridgeshire don't get a big lead in their first innings."
