JUDO players representing Yorkshire and Lancashire battled for medals in the annual Roses Match.

Kendal Judo Club supplied a boys cadet team of Calum Hartley, Danny Harper and Michael Horley were each pitted against a Yorkshire rival.

After Hartley lost his fight, it was up to Danny Harper to gain a result.

Giving 20 kilos away to fellow British team member Adam Theacker Harper faced a difficult fight. Undeterred, he attacked with excellent speed and agility, throwing Theacker for ippon to take the match.

Also up against a much heavier opponent, Michael Horley, was to mirror Harper to defeat his opponent and see the team to overall victory.

The girls cadet team of Beth Hoggarth and Laura Hogg were representing not only the cadets but also the youth and senior groups.

Hogg won two of her three fights in the U57kg class. Hoggarth, fighting at U78kg, faced heavier opponents, but outclassed all three.

The junior boys team were all Kendal members with the exception of one player. At U60kg Steve Rogan had a convincing win with his usual superb technique. Danny Harper was unlucky to lose his U73kg match with a penalty against him.

In the U-81kg class and giving a considerable weight advantage to his opponent, Anthony Parkinson dominated throughout to take the fight with ippon.

With three out of four victories another team medal was guaranteed.

In the senior men's team U60kg, Phil Rogan - ranked number four in the country - made short work of his opponent to take the victory. In the U73kg class Anthony Parkinson could not repeat his performance in the junior boys category and lost by ippon.

The final results of the day saw the Lancashire squad, made up of players from throughout the North West, take five of the six team medals and 34 of the 51 medals in the single-player matches.
