TWO of South Lakeland’s most experienced fell runners were prizewinners in Sunday’s Settle Hills Race and some of the area’s younger athletes triumphed in the English Junior Championship events.
Milnthorpe’s Wendy Dodds ran well to beat Clayton team mate Jean Rawlinson in the women’s V50s race while Holme’s Harry Catlow took the honours in the men’s V70 event.
Meanwhile, Helm Hill’s Gemma Crowther led home the Under-14 girls and her team- mate Chloe Rodham took the honours in the Under-16 girls race.
The fourth round of the English Junior Championships attracted a large number of young athletes who battled it out for points over Peart Crags and Attermire.
The Under-12s race was particularly well contested and Cumberland Fell Runners’ James Bowness was pushed all the way by Richard Shuttle-worth of Preston to win by 12 seconds. CFR’s Rosie Stuart – daughter of the legendary Kenny Stuart – won the girls’ race in impressive style.
Alistair Brownlee continued his good run of form to win the Under-16 Yorkshire Champion-ship.Mark Buckingham was pushed all the way by Skipton’s Stuart Hunn in the Under-18 race over the Attermire course.

n AMBLESIDE’S Nick Sharp was just three seconds outside the course record when he won the Langstrath Race, from Stonethwaite, by over three minutes from Borrowdale’s Ben Bardsley.
He led Ambleside to the team prize over the 4.5 mile course that includes 1,400ft of climbing and was ably supported by Nick Fish – who was third in his first fell race for two years – and Jon Deegan. Kendal’s Phil Whiting was first veteran in ninth place.
Kate Beaty, who is having a successful season, won the women’s event. She has just clinched the British LV40 title.
Katy Moore, 16, who runs for Brighton and Hove, took third place in her first ever fell run.
