Kendal Town progressed into the Preliminary round of the FA Cup after they picked up an impressive 3-1 win against Northern league side Thornaby.
The Mintcakes who now travel to play Bishop Auckland in the next round played well against a difficult opponent where Finlay lynch, Ben Thomas and Tom Kilifin were all on the scoresheet.
Kendal who more often than not struggle against teams from the North East started the game well and missed numerous chances after Tom Kilifin fired the ball into the side netting from Rob Wilson’s free kick into the box before Steve Yawson fired the ball at the keeper from close range.
Thornaby’s best attempts fell to Hogan who fired his effort at Ben Willcock before blazing over from a corner.
As the first half progressed both teams created further opportunities where Darren Nightingale headed the ball over from a corner while a Thornaby player saw their head crash off the cross bar. Shaun Sailor nearly scored for Kendal after his effort was blocked by a defender while Mc Neil curled his effort wide of the post.
The start of the second half saw the match referee brandish a yellow card to a Thornaby player after bad challenge on Martin Grundy.
Kendal pushed on from the restart with Rob Wilson, Shaun Sailor and Finlay Lynch going close before opening the scoring after 59 minutes when Steve Yawson who won the ball in midfield played a clinical pass into the path of Finlay Lynch who fired his effort into the bottom corner.
The Mintcakes continued to dominate before going 2-0 up after Ben Thomas capitalised on a mistake by the Thornaby keeper who played a poor pass into their centre half, before Thomas collected the ball and lifted it over the keeper.
Kendal sealed the win with seven minutes remaining after Mambwe Chilufya played a nice pass into Tom Kilifin who placed the ball into the net as Kendal went 3-0 up. Thornaby scored a late consolation in injury time, however Kendal were worthy winners on an impressive afternoon for Jimmy Marshall’s team.
Kendal was due to play Bury on Tuesday night however the game was postponed after Bury had an FA Cup replay against Hallam.
Kendal decided to play a friendly against Fleetwood Towns Academy at Parkside Road, as The Mintcakes eased to a 3-0 win.
Three quick fire goals just before half time by Nathan Hankinson, Joe Dickson and Brandon Croskell Robinson sealed the win. Kendal host Wythenshawe on Saturday.
