WITH weather having played a part in the first third of the season, the Westmorland League could hardly be closer with just 8 points separating the top six.
Division 1:
Westgate are top of the pile thanks to a superb all round performance from Dylan Conroy who scored 44 and took 5/6, including a hat trick against Burneside.
Sam Frith weighed in with an unbeaten 50 as Westgate totalled 208/5 declared. Burneside replied with 102, Simon Huck scoring 31. Westgate’s game at Sedbergh School was rained off on Sunday.
It was Mike Wills with 42 and 2/26 who starred as Milnthorpe beat Shireshead by 10 runs in a low scoring encounter. Milnthorpe made 102/7, Joe Oliver taking 3/5 from 12 overs. Shireshead slipped to 10/4 but Robert Skipworth (22) and Oliver (27) brought Shireshead into the game, before Wills took the vital wicket of Dave Jack (13) and as so often in low scoring games he final wicket was a run out.
It was also a bowlers’s day at Sedgwick where the visitors were indebted to Aaron Lomas (30) in being able to make 87 as Jon Mason, Phil Mason and Steve Beck each took three wickets. Richard Hanson (7/25) as befits a “streak bowler” hit his lengths as the ball did the talking as Silverdale fell 21 runs short, Tom Ridley taking 3/25.
Kyle Whitelocks had an even better day taking the best figures so far this season with 8/15 as Bare were dismissed for 34.
Earlier Heysham had been in trouble themselves as Robert White (3/18) removed their top order, but the long handle of Sam Calverley (67) came to the rescue as the visitors posted 154/8.
Carnforth beat Warton by 10 wickets after Tom Parkinson had taken 4/26 as their neighbours were all out for 70.
A brilliant all round performance by Alex Davidson wasn’t quite enough to give Arnside victory against Trimpell. His 75 was the main contribution in Arnside’s 205 all out, Sam Johnston taking 5/70. Davidson then took 5/28, but with Michael Bland (32) and Scott Sparks (24) the visitors finished on 167/9.
Division 2:
Westgate 2nds are top of Division 2. The day of the all rounder continued as Dakshina De Silva (55) helped them to 168 all out, as George Vinall took 5/35.
De Silva then took 5/8 as Windermere were all out for 74. Will Anderson (37) and Bob Davies (26) added 52 for the first wicket for Cartmel, but after Dan Portmann (3/22) broke the partnership, 3/12 from Harvey Williams helped bowl out the racecourse club for 122.
Williams (30) got Kirkby Lonsdale off to an electric start, but after a flutter, James Royce (46 not out) saw Kirkby home by 6 wickets.
Robert Warne (56) celebrated his birthday of two days before with his first fifty of the season as Coniston made 221 all out, Colin Gunning taking 3/45.
Sedbergh School 3rds lost early wickets to Mike Burton, but Henry Jones Perrott (40 not out) and Benjamin Starling (35) briefly threatened an upset, but the school subsided to 128 all out.
Ingleton beat Netherfield 3rds by 4 wickets.
Shireshead 2nds made 160/8 at home to Holme with Simon Gould scoring 50, whilst Lee Barnes took 4/50. Richard Herron (25) and Barnes (28) dug in as Holme batted out for a draw with 97/6.
Division 3:
A brilliant all round performance from captain Rob Speak dominated Galgate’s game with Arnside 2nds.
He took 4/18 and Matthew Cooper took 4/25 as Arnside were dismissed for 88.
Speak then made 75 not out (10 fours, 2 sixes) as Galgate won by 7 wickets in less than 13 overs. Paul Duckett (65 not out) was in form for Holme 2nds against Third Division leaders, Ambleside. Holme made 130/8 and with Stuart Hunter (4/15) playing his first game after a horrendous finger injury in 2019, it needed Barnaby Wileman (39 not out) to guide them home.
Heysham 2nds (136/8) had the better of a close game against Carnforth 3rds (123/9) whilst Morecambe 3rds game at Bolton le Sands was abandoned because of a waterlogged pitch.
Matt Salisbury (63) top scored as Sedgwick 2nds made 158/5. Silverdale 2nds replied with 63, Adam Kershaw (4/21) and Ben Harvey (4/3) being in the wickets.
Division 4:
In Division 4, three wickets each from Ollie Wilson, Simon Wilson and Jason Parkin bowled Bare 2nds for 89. Josh Bowring (24) top scored as Trimpell 2nds won by 4 wickets.
Three wickets each for Chris Chappell, Ben Melton and Georgina Brown bowled Coniston 2nds out for 53. 19 by Kirkby Lonsdale’s Niall Parkinson was the highest score in a low scoring game as their second string beat their Burneside counterparts by 16 runs.
Mike Allen took 5/9 as Kirkby scraped 72, but it was enough as 6/24 from Dan Teasdale scuppered Burneside.
Rain truncated the innings of Jamie Ulyatt (60 not out) and Freddie Whatmuff (47 not out) for Morecambe 4ths against Milnthorpe 2nds and for Westgate 3rds versus Shireshead 3rds.Thomas Duke scored 43 not out as Ingleton 2nds won by 9 wickets.
In the Hackney and Leigh Trophy, Trimpell beat Milnthorpe to take pole position in Group 1.
In the British Rose Trophy, Windermere beat Netherfield 3rds by 7 wickets, Denzil Henderson taking 3/7 and Sam Harrison hitting 44 not out.
