TRAILQUEST: LANGDALE rider Bryan Singleton turned in a monumental performance over a Lakeland cycle orienteering double at the weekend, posting the fastest time in Saturday's event at Grizedale and winning the veteran category at Keswick the next day.
In both events he beat rivals with a potentially bigger advantage - Grizedale hosted a specialist type of orienteering event in which he was up against experts, while local riders should have had the edge in the trailquest event around Derwentwater.
The event at Grizedale, requiring stricter orienteering skills than a trailquest, attracted just 33 riders, but they included several foot orienteers and members of the National Mountainbike Orienteering squad.
However, Singleton knows the Grizedale tracks well and put that knowledge to effect by covering the 33km course in 1 hour, 51 minutes 40 seconds to take the veteran men category.
Neil Atkinson, from Milnthorpe, posted 1-51-53 to win the senior men's category, while Scottish orienteer Janine Inman dominated the women's class, completing a shorter 24 km course in 1-49-21 ahead of England junior orienteer Becky Hoare.
Riders at Grizedale had faced wind and showers, but the weather could not have been more different at Keswick next day when the wind dropped and sun just got brighter.
Local knowledge told in the senior men category where Chris Hope from Cockermouth notched up the highest score with 476, but Singleton's 450 took the veteran title and was third best overall.
