DOUBLE Olympic medallist, swimmer Nick Gillingham MBE (above) is to visit The Lakes School, Troutbeck Bridge, on Wednesday, June 13.
An outstanding sporting personality Nick, a former world record holder and multi World and European championship gold medal winner, was ranked No. 1 in the world for the 200 metres breaststroke for five years from 1989 to 1994.
He won a silver at Seoul and bronzes at Atlanta and Bracelona when he represented Great Britain in the Olympics.
He retired from competitive swimming in 1996 and now runs his own sports communication business SCG Initiative and delivers motivational programmes for squads up to Olympic standard.
He has also developed the swimZone, a swimming fitness programme for all ages and abilities through leisure centres and health clubs in the UK.
Nick will be spending the whole day at the school. He will be introduced at assembly and then take a morning session with gifted and talented students in Years 7, 8 and 9.
Year 6 primary school children from the area who are learning to swim will have the benefit of meeting him and after lunch Nick will work with the GCSE PE students from local secondary schools as part of the Year 10 Federation/Partnerships Schools initiative.
