LOCAL cyclists were to the fore in the National 10 miles time trialling championships at Sawtry, near Peterborough, on Sunday with Oxenholme rider Lynn Hamel finishing fifth and leading her newly-formed greengroup.com team to the national team title.

Lynn covered the course in 23mins 27secs, compared to winner Juli8a Shaw's 22-30, and the winning team was completed by Charlotte Wadsworth (25-13) and Lynsey Anderson (25-30).

Ulverston's Paul O'Mahoney (Pro Bike Kit) was eighth in the men's championship, won by Northern Ireland's Michael Hutchinson, clocking 21mins and 1 sec compared to Hutchinson's 19-43. Gethin Butler (Preston Wheelers) was 15th and Chris Anderson (Lakes Road Club) was 73rd in 22-22.

On the road racing front, the Morecambe Day two-day was won by Dave Collins (Science in Sport) from Alistair Robinson (Keswickbikes.com) with Carnforth rider Matt Cronshaw third and junior rider Jack Pullar from Bolton le Sands, riding for Kinesis, 18th. The event drew a full field and began with a criterium at Salt Ayre before heading on to roads in the Lune Valley and then back to Salt Ayre. Organiser Geoff Newcombe was delighted with the event's success. Now in its third year and with sponsorship from Biketreks, of Ambleside, it produced some fine, attacking racing throughout both days. Kendal rider Dave Everett (Pro Bike Kit) had a very strong second day and finished third in the long road race and 28th overall.

As part of the Cumbria Cycling Week, Askews Cycles promoted a very popular lanequest event from The Heron pub in Kendal. The runaway winner was Dave Hollingham with a massive 427 points from his two-hour stint, 32 points clear of his closest rival. For many, it was their first taste of 'orienteering on a bike' but everyone enjoyed the experience.

Lancaster CC's 50 miles time trial at Cockermouth on Sunday was won by Cleveleys rider Derek Parkinson in 1-55-08 despite a nagging head and cross wind on Embleton Bank. Kent Valley's Andrew Barlow was 9th in 2-02-09 and other local returns were: Tim Bennett 2-11-22; Neil Stirling 2-26-11; Fred Pickstone 2-32-32 and Ann Nicholson 2-35-51.

Ulverston's Mike Speight (Barrow Central Wheelers) was seventh in the West Pennine 10 miles time trial at Garstang on Saturday in 23-20. The winner was Blackburn's Ian Stott in 22-16.

Kent Valley's lastest midweek 10 at Milnthorpe proved a wet affair, but that barely seemed to affect Paul O'Mahoney (Pro Bike Kit guest rider) who used the event as a warm-up for the coming national championship and won with 21-32 from David Baxter on 22-56 and Hoiward Cain on 23-02. Junior Calum Nicholson was fourth in 23-09 ahead of Andrew Barlow 23-51; Adrian Yate 24-20; and juvenile Jonathon Knox 24-25.
