THE cream of British Hillclimb Championship contenders head for Barbon, near Kirkby Lonsdale for their annual battle on Saturday.
Cars competing in the Westmorland Motor Club run meeting range from Peugeot 205 GTI's to 650bhp Formula-1 looka-like single-seaters capable of reaching 120mph on the straight. The event attracts large crowds and is part of the Nicholson Maclaren Aviation British Hillclimb Championship. Ulverston garage owner Keith Edwards will be among the field in his turbo-charged 120mph Audi Quattro Sport. He has won the national class championship for the past three years. The tarmacadam surfaced hill on the Barbon Manor Estate is .627km in length and has a 1-in-12 gradient with two bends and one hairpin. Practice runs start at 10am and timed runs at 2pm. Admission is £8 with under-16s and parking free - no dogs are allowed.
