MORECAMBE went within an ace of a sensational derby victory at Kendal only to fall one run short in a stunning finish in the Shap Road sun.

The locals just ran out of time as they chased down Kendal's 241 with skipper Mark Lomas the unlucky man.

After Gulam Maje (38) and Tommy Clough (17) had given Morecambe's chase a decent start, professional Werner Coetsee could only manage 13.

Ryan Smith made 27 but Nick Milner went for a duck only for Gareth Pedder to smash 40.

While that was going on, Lomas was going about his business of building a match-winning innings.

The captain was in form and even with 12 needed of the last over there was every chance of a dramatic win.

That 12 became 10 off the last two balls with the evergreen Kevin Howarth bowling.

Lomas smashed a six meaning it was four off the final ball - but he could only manage a two and Kendal had their winning draw with Howarth the pick of the bowlers with 4-48.

Earlier history was made as Terry Hunte yet again confirmed himself as a Northern League legend.

The West Indian, who first appeared in this country playing for Lancashire League outfit Nelson way back in 1983, made a magnificent 121 off just 102 balls.

That was his 41st century in the Northern League - and also took him past 16,000 runs.

Ikram Ullah also made 69 as the Cumbrians posted their 241-5 with Gareth Pedder picking up two wickets.
