FAINT hopes of promotion from Division Two were extinguished for Milnthorpe Corinthians by a 2-0 defeat at Burnley Belvedere.
Cors got off to a flying start and should have taken the lead within the first minute. Bobby Walsh slipped past his marker in midfield and released Aidan Caswell on the left. Caswell's deep cross found Peter Nicholls in acres of space but his header was off target.
With most of the play taking place in the Belvedere half Cors notched up a string of corners but the half chances they presented were not taken.
Cors' inability to turn dominance into goals gave Belvedere increasing confidence and in the second half they began to dominate.
From a right-wing corner, the centre-half brought the ball under control, dummied past two defenders and rifled a right-foot shot across goal into the far corner, giving Sharpe no chance.
Despite the introduction of new legs, Cors still struggled to make any impact going forward. A Belvedere attack down the left flank looked to have petered out when Newby intercepted and shaped to clear. Instead he opted to try to dribble his way out of trouble but lost his footing, presenting the ball to a forward who raced in to score.
