THE 1,000th entry has been received for the Brathay Windermere Marathon, which returns to the Lakeland running calendar this summer. Ben Mitchell, 20, of Uplands Drive, Arnside (pictured above) was the 'landmark' runner for the event which the Brathay Trust is reviving as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations.
Brathay, the registered charity that delivers personal development programme to young people from across the UK subsidised by corporate training for industry, also hopes to raise funds from the race and sponsorship to support its work.
The target number of entries is 1,500 and the oldest man to sign up so far is 73-year-old Robin Wilson from Surrey. Closer to home, Gillian Thompson from Barrow, is the most senior woman in the field at 66. Competitors must be aged at least 18, but a 5k road race for young people will be held on the day.
The Windermere marathon was run between 1982 and1986 when a fields of 1,800 took part in the middle of the 80s' running boom.
